Description

Barrier is available in three variations of manifestation, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. (Discovering these is left as an exercise for the student.) These variations are listed together for convenience -- each is a completely separate technique.

The first, known as the 'bubble' Barrier creates a magical sphere encapsulating the caster, defending the caster from attacks from all directions.

The second, known as the 'skintight' Barrier, usually manifests as some sort of armour, worn close to the caster's body.

The third, known as the 'aura' Barrier, is very similar to the 'bubble' Barrier, but also fills the intervening space between the outer bubble and the caster with defensive energies, stymying phasing attacks, for instance.

Logistics

As there are several variations of this technique, you must list which variant your character has learnt on their sheet.

Bubble and Skintight Barriers, if separately learnt, may be simultaneously active. An Aura Barrier cannot be active at the same time as any other defense of this type.

Bubble

Barrier can absorb 200% of the caster's MagPL before collapsing. It cannot be charged. The protection may be increased by +50% MagPL for 15 (11/19) tech days.

You cannot total more than 600% MagPL in Durability using this tech. Each scene, Barrier may be cast once for 60% MagPL stamina drain, regardless of how far it has been upgraded. To be recast after that, an equal amount of stamina must be expended as durability is gained. If the caster wishes, they may recast it for less than the maximum possible durability, to retain stamina for other purposes.

This tech costs 90 (68/113) tech days.

Skintight

Barrier can absorb 200% of the caster's MagPL before collapsing. It cannot be charged. The protection may be increased by +50% MagPL for 15 (11/19) tech days.

You cannot total more than 400% MagPL in Durability using this tech. Each scene, Barrier may be cast once for 60% MagPL stamina drain, regardless of how far it has been upgraded. To be recast after that, an equal amount of stamina must be expended as durability is gained. If the caster wishes, they may recast it for less than the maximum possible durability, to retain stamina for other purposes.

This tech costs 120 (90/150) tech days.

Aura

Barrier can absorb 200% of the caster's MagPL before collapsing. It cannot be charged. The protection may be increased by +50% MagPL for 30 (23/38) tech days.

You cannot total more than 400% MagPL in Durability using this tech. Each scene, Barrier may be cast once for 60% MagPL stamina drain, regardless of how far it has been upgraded. To be recast after that, an equal amount of stamina must be expended as durability is gained. If the caster wishes, they may recast it for less than the maximum possible durability, to retain stamina for other purposes.

This tech costs 180 (135/225) tech days.
