Concept
Most characters in Alternate Dragonball Z are people or sentient creatures with enormous amounts of combat-worthy power ... enough for many to consider them demigods. When used carelessly, they can level cities, bring down mountains, and even destroy planets. As such, the setting of this room is strongly slanted towards fighting. While it is possible to create a character that can not or does not fight, it is often far easier to RP with a character that follows the theme.
Aside from that, however, AltDBZ accepts all kinds of characters, from nearly every genre. We have sword fighters and knights, as well as robots and mechanized mobile suits. We have mutants, mages, martial artists, and mental cases. We are generally open about the kinds of characters we allow into the room, so long as they fit into our mold. Most popular, however, are modernized mages and martial artists
Here are a few kinds of characters we typically do not allow players to have:
- Gods (especially those who are supposed to transcend/replace the existing system of gods in the room)
- Canon/Source Characters (and those related to them)
- Characters starting with extensive backhistory (most characters who are freshly approved should not have much impact on the world already -- backhistories from alternate dimensions or mundane mortal lives are okay, usually)
Types of Characters
The majority of characters in this room are "competitive". Competitive characters have superhuman combat powers which build with battle experience and training or research. Competitive characters have "power levels" and "techniques" which define their abilities in combat. Most of AltDBZ's rules revolve around the creation and nurturing of competitive characters. These characters start out on the low rung of the ladder, but with effort, they can be built up to be forces to be reckoned with.
Another kind of character is the "non-competitive" type. They are unbound by the restrictions of competitive characters, and can, thus, be made nearly as strong or as weak as the player chooses. However, you can't spend all of your time RPing with non-competitive characters. In addition, they aren't allowed to participate in most plots, and can't help competitive characters along in their progress, in most circumstances.
Plot characters are non-competitive characters who are specifically created by staff to participate in a particular plot. You can not apply for a plot character; they are either controlled by staffers, or a staffer allows you to control one. Their powers can be adjusted as staff see fit. They are usually only as long-lived as the plot, or less so.
Static characters are a little like the competitive version of plot characters. They last longer, because they are usually assigned to long-term roles, such as military leaders or other important figures. However, they are bound to the competitive play rules. The only exception to this is that the staff can review the character and adjust any part of him or her to make sure he or she still fits the niche he or she is supposed to. Like plot characters, you do not apply for static characters. Posessing them is an honor bestowed by the staff for demonstrating excellent role playing ability and imagination.
Mortal characters are the common, ordinary people who have no superhuman abilities. You do not even need to apply for mortals. They do tend to be difficult to RP with, however, as most of the characters in the room are concerned with business relating to fighting, while most mortal characters are not.
About Source Characters
In general, we do not allow source characters. This means we don't allow characters from real publications, including but not limited to those from any of the Dragonball episodes or movies. Applying for a handle for one of these characters on IMC may result in the loss of your handle application privileges. We don't allow people who are related to or friends with the source characters, either (since most of the source characters have been dead for many years anyway). Both of these things have exceptions, but they are almost always done by invitation from the staff. Please do not ask us for source characters. We strongly encourage you to make original ideas of your own.
