These are the official character rules for Gray Savants. For the story-based description of Foci, go here.

Name: Gray Savant
Class: Racial Overlay
Tech Bias: Bias penalty from previous overlay (either Order or Chaos Focus) is eliminated
Available Power Types: Phys, Ki or Psi, Magic
History and Background Page: Foci

NB: Ki-based skills are generally considered to be Chaos-based, and Psi-based skills are generally considered Order-based.

Racial Advantages:

Channel Order and Chaos: This ability is a pre-requisite to becoming a Gray Savant, with the gain of the ability basically defining the point at which one becomes a Gray Savant. It is the ability to wield both Order and Chaos based powers, without penalty, and the knowledge to mix them together within spells and effects without causing any sort of backlash or undesired negative results. (Like ripping the fabric of the universe. That's bad.)

Energy Moderation (Chaos): Because of the mixture of Chaos and Order energies within them, Gray Savants that were previously Chaos Foci no longer ruin inanimate objects at their touch.

Order/Chaos Sensing: Gray Savants have the ability to sense the flows of both Order and Chaos, much like an Order Foci or Chaos Foci can. Because of their increased abilities to sense both sides, however, their sensory abilities can now more accurately determine magical effects, allowing them to even sense the residual effects of magic that was cast by a person, so long as they had cast with the last few days, allowing them to detect magicians, and gain a rough estimate of their power. Of course, this ability is not fool-proof. Having defensive/enchantment spells cast on one (not offensive spells) can create a similar residual effect on that one, whether they are a mage or not.

Racial Disadvantages:

Energy Moderation (Order): Because of the mixture of Chaos and Order energies within them, Gray Savants that were previously Order Foci are now somewhat more likely to become ill, whereas previously their (Orderly) immune system was very impressive.

Power Type Limitation: Gray Savants that were originally Order Foci still cannot learn to wield ki as a ki fighter does, although they may have some resident within them, as they're alive. However, they are still capable of wielding Magic and Psi.

Power Type Limitation: Gray Savants that were originally Chaos Foci still cannot learn to wield Psi. However, they can still learn to wield both Magic and Ki.

Other:

Loss of original Overlay abilities: The increases in Base Gain when fighting an opposed Foci or wielder are lost. However, the decreased Base Gain when fighting a similarly-aligned Foci or Wielder are also removed, and the decreased Charge Rate when casting an opposed spell is also removed. Unless otherwise noted, all other original overlay abilities are retained. However, the abilities of the opposing original overlay may still not be learned, unless otherwise noted. (For example, a Gray Savant who was originally a Chaos Focus cannot learn the Imbue ability that allows the Order Foci to create Black Iron.)
