Ciel Deschaine stands at an average height, and her physical build is that of someone who engages in intensive regular exercise. While for the most part she appears as a friendly and easygoing individual, when in need, she can be severe and serious to a fault. Her other distinguishing trait is her hair, which is a natural blue color. In the past she cut it short, but nowadays she has taken to letting it grow a bit more than usual.

Powers

Since the events of the Second Null, Ciel Deschaine has completely lost her magical prowess. Only recently has she regained her Ki mastery, and like all other power wielders, it was regained recently. Since those times, however, she has all but abandoned her former practices as a paladin, instead focusing on being a more pragmatic sort of warrior. Even her signature long knives have been replaced with her beginning training with the sword.

Ciel carries a trademarked weapon called the Blue Rose, which blends spiritual energy with modern-day mechanics. Channeling her Ki through the sword does more than simply giving it more power. While Ciel has recently acquired this weapon, she has yet to unlock its full potential.

As an aside to her sword mastery, she also has taken to blending martial arts with actual expenditure of Ki. Ciel is capable of seamlessly blending several styles of combat to suit her needs. Still a budding power wielder, she has yet to truly develop this ability into a powerful force.

Biography

The Deschaine family has lived for a rather long time. While not very well-known, it has nonetheless always been one of aristocrats. Their most notable aspect would be their large devotion to Catholicism, despite the world's fervent clinging to Kamism. Not even its members know exactly when a more secret tradition of theirs started, but ever since that indeterminate point in time, aside from worshipping God at church, the Deschaine began to serve their Lord as paladins. The practice was not consistent, though. Sometimes only one member of the family at a given time pledged to slay evil and protect the innocent. Other times, an entire family of four could be fighting at the same time.

Ciel was born to Joshua Deschaine and his wife Lillya as the sole heiress of the family line. Both of her parents were avid practicioners of paladinhood, and many a time again during her childhood did they set out to combat some evil or another. Joshua and Lillya raised their girl lovingly, and for the most part she had a happy childhood. Ciel always was a straight A student, and as her academic studies flourished, so did her devotion to her religion. It was at the age of nine that she decided to follow in her parents' footsteps as a paladin. Both Joshua and Lillya accepted this, and began to train their child. Ciel learned well, as was her nature, but her training was halted unexpectedly three years later when her parents were met with an untimely demise. What Ciel describes as a black dragon stormed the halls of the Deschaine manor and did away with his enemies, her parents. After that it left, having no interest in the girl herself.

At the age of twelve Ciel was more or less on her own. Her parents had left her with a sizable fortune and enough assets to ensure that she could live her entire life without worry, and she was left with foster parents; merely friends of the family. Since that time the young woman became more or less a recluse, but still a cheerful and friendly one. The loss of her parents was a great pain, but she never let it govern her life. So, she continued to study and to practice paladinhood on her own.

At the age of fifteen, Ciel mastered her first glyph; the Sword. She then decided to do her first real service for God by doing away with a local gang of power wielders which had recently begun to abuse their powers, using them for murder. Since then, she actively became a paladin, save without having completed her training.

Still, her nature as a recluse didn't change. Rather than making any friends in high school, the girl merely spent her time in her room. She developed particular tastes and hobbies, such as reading like a maniac and collecting several books on several subjects. The library at the Deschaine manor already had enough, but adding to the collection was a particular hobby that she liked. Another was her irrepressible love for plushies, though this she guarded fervently from everyone else. Among all of the subjects that she has ever studied, Ciel liked history the most. The past has always been a great mystery to her, and deep down the past was where she had been truly happy. And so when she reached the age of eighteen, she decided to enroll into the Schule vom Gemut to pursue a career in history. And to hone her abilities as well, of course.

It was there where her impenetrable armor began to more or less crack. Eventually Ciel fell in with a young woman who more or less thought akin to her: the witch hunter Constance Ina Kaider. Since then she more or less began to be less and less reclusive, forging more friendships with other people. She has in fact been unofficially adopted into the Kaider family, something that she holds in very very high regard, though she doesn't voice it that way.

Nowadays, Ciel is still serving the Lord as a paladin, pledging to protect the innocent and to slay evil. She's still the same naive girl, but a bit more outgoing than before. When not studying at the schule, she's often seen spending time (mostly) with her almost-sister Constance Ina Kaider, or this year's Budokai champion, Johnny Gnash. That is, when she's not out doing her magical girl of holy wrath routine.

Second Null

Ciel Deschaine participated in the titanic battles of the Second Null. Defending Cardinal from the Prison Island escapees, fighting Mother's God Gears in the Devil's Throne, even watching the corpse of the reality destroyer make its encore appearance in our world... Ciel fought and survived. When reality was altered yet again, she found herself a warrior with no power. A warrior in a world of peace. A world in which she could live in and be extremely happy.

Thus she settled into a more mundane way of life. While Ciel trained her mortal body throughout the three subsequent years, she had no inkling as to becoming a vigilante or the like. Finishing her studies, and working on her post-graduate studies, she eventually landed a job as a professor at the Schule vom Gemut teaching varying History classes.

When abilities and powers began to re-emerge, it was difficult to ignore the call to arms. While Ciel knew the god she once served never existed, and that to adhere to some other religion would lead her down a road she had long since abandoned, nowadays she plans to use her powers to protect Cardinal once more. Only this time, she would do it for herself and for others, not for some obscure deity no one has even seen.
